Peace Corps

The Peace Corps is a U.S.  Government organization which sends Americans abroad to volunteer their time for two years. The Peace Corps only goes to countries to which they have been invited for specific types of assistance by each country’s national government. Volunteers work in many different areas, including community health, science and English education, agriculture, small-business development, and environmental education.  However, an equally-important aspect of a volunteer’s job is in making personal connections with citizens of other countries, and participating in cultural exchange.

The three official goals of the Peace Corps, which have not changed since President John F. Kennedy established the organization in 1961, are:
  • To help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women
  • To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served
  • To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans
